The engineers who seek adventurous
life & willing
to take calculated risk & make money view Merchant
Navy as a promising career. Shipping industry has been
growing steadily & has retained its No. 1 transport
medium when it comes to international trade. India too
is in expansion mode with up-gradation of exiting port
facilities & introduction of new ones. Also the project
of linking major rivers in India may create an additional & alterative
opportunity of in-land water transportation. Also the rising
trend of cruise ship related tourism has opened new avenues
for interested engineers.
Mechanical, Electrical & Electronics & Telecommunications Engineers are
much in demand as the job profile on cargo ship is largely maintenance and operation
oriented. However shipbuilding industry require these engineers along with civil
engineers to build large ships equipped with all the amenities & safety features.
Ships have pumps, motors & large engines propelling them to desired destinations.
Mechanical Engineers have to operate & take good care of them as they perform
the important roles in ship utilities.
Refrigeration & Air Conditioning is also other major area of operation for
Mechanical engineers. These ships are dependant on generators for the power requirements & Electrical
engineers has a critical role to play. Design, Operation & Maintenance of
electrical systems is a daily routine for them.
Navigation systems are the eyes & ear of any cargo ship. Latest & technically
advanced navigation equipments are used to keep the ship on track & in touch
with ground staff. Criticality of their operation is undeniable. E & TC engineers
are required to show excellent skills in utilizing these equipments to the best
of their ability & show innovative attitude during the testing times. To
become a marine engineer one has to join shipping companies as a trainee engineer.
Depending upon their specialization they are trained on the job. Later on they
are absorbed in the company on cantract basis. These jobs are seldom offered
on permanent basis. Generally one-year contracts are offered and renewed annually.
Now days a flexible policy is being adopted regarding family accommodation. So
